From ABS-CBN News Online: Lions win in OT, grab share of NCAA lead Three-peat seeking San Beda found a way to break through San Sebastian’s zone defense as it eked out a pulsating 84-83 overtime win Monday to grab a piece of the lead with Letran College in Season 84 of the NCAA basketball tournament at the Cuneta Astrodome.
Pong Escobal, playing with low energy after getting hit by typhoid fever, spearheaded the assault as he machine-gunned his way to 21 points including five OT points that sealed the Lions their third victory in row.
“I just know my team needs a leader so I tried to be one most of the time,” said Escobal, a 22-year-old fourth year Management student who hails from Davao City. Escobal’s biggest moment came with 20.4 seconds left in OT when he drove through heavy traffic and scored on a lay-up that turned out to be the game winner.
San Beda coach Frankie Lim, however, said the key was breaking their foes’ zone defense and playing with one to perfection.
“I think we conquered their zone, they tried to kill us with the zone. We gave them a dose of their own medicine,” said San Beda coach Frankie Lim.
It was also sweet revenge for the Lions, who got beaten by the Stags, 77-78, also in OT in a pre-season tournament last May.
San Sebastian appeared headed to pulling off a major upset when it led by 12 points in the third quarter thanks mainly to its seeming formidable zone and lethal outside shooting.
That’s when Escobal and the Lions said "enough."
“I keep telling my players that San Sebastian is not a weak team, they’ve showed it by beating us in the pre-season and today by nearly beating us again,” said Lim.
The Stags had a chance to book the win late in regulation period but John Raymundo missed a three-pointer with seven-tenths of a second to go, forcing extra time.
The Mendiola-based dribblers had more opportunity to turn things around in their favor but failed to capitalized on it after PBL standout Jim Viray’s triple kissed the tip of the ring as the endgame buzzer sounded.
San Sebastian bean pole Jason Ballesteros dished out one of his best performances with 16 points and 15 rebounds but he couldn’t prevent his team from absorbing a third setback against a triumph. More articles from other sources. Click "Read More" button below. |

From Manila Bulletin Online: San Beda survives PCU scare By JP ABCEDE
Defending champion San Beda is not just about Sam Ekwe, Ogie Menor and Pong Escobal.
Borgie Hermida proved that yesterday as the back-up guard helped power the Red Lions to a 72-63 win over the Philippine Christian University and to a share of the lead in the NCAA Basketball Tournament at the Cuneta Astrodome in Pasay City. With starting guard Escobal nursing a flu, Hermida rose to the occasion, completing a three-point to break a 56-56 count with 2:55 remaining. That play turned out to be the most critical as the Red Lions steadily pulled away until Menor sealed the win with two charities for a 71-61 lead, 27 ticks left. With the win, the Red Lions tied Letran for the lead with similar 2-0 cards. Earlier, Mapua streaked to its third straight win against one loss by beating University of Perpetual Help System Dalta, 76-65. "We struggled in the first quarter. We really started flat," remarked San Beda head coach Frankie Lim. "It was because of the long layoff. I was in denial, we got rusty with the ten-day break." Hermida topscored for San Beda with 17 points on top of six rebounds, three assists, and two steals. Bam Gamalinda hit 13 points, while Menor added 11 points. "At the end of the day, a win is a win. I will take it," Lim said. "Ogie played well, Bambam played well and Borgie hit a big shot." PCU fell further at the bottom with three straight losses. The loss was another disappointment for PCU which led three-fourths of the way. Lei Mar Navarro led Philppine Christian with 16 points and four assists. Liz Amparado had 12 points. Ekwe and PCU’s Beau Belga canceled each other in a battle of giants with the Dolphin center making eight points and 13 rebounds and the Nigerian producing nine points and 11 rebounds. | By Cedelf P. Tupas Philippine Daily Inquirer | Posted date: June 29, 2008 | SAN BEDA’S NEW SKIPPER PONG ESCOBAL called his teammates the most talented players in the NCAA seniors basketball tournament. And on the first game of the season, the Red Lions, bent on winning a third straight crown, flaunted the weapons in their vast arsenal to crush the Mapua Cardinals, 85-56, yesterday at the Araneta Coliseum. “We have a team of very talented players who are very committed to win,” said Escobal, who issued a team-high eight assists on top of nine points. “We were very disciplined today and very unselfish.” The talent and discipline were reflected on a 55 percent shooting clip and a plus-16 rebound difference. The unselfishness led to a total of 23 assists. Lions coach Frankie Lim marveled at the way his team played, but met victory with caution. “They (Lions) were pretty good. I thought it was going to be close,” said Lim, whose team dominated the Cardinals, despite shooting just two free throws the entire game. “But I don’t expect to have the same kind of games for the rest of the season. We just caught Mapua on a bad night.” First Game
