Red Lions rip Altas for No.5

Stags avert another collapse

MANILA, Philippines—It was easy for San Beda College Lions coach Frankie Lim to inject pun on Sam Ekwe’s uniform brouhaha Monday.

Not that the College of St. Benilde’s protest over the Lions’ convincing 71-54 victory didn’t matter to him.

It’s just that San Beda achieved several objectives following the Lions’ 70-48 mauling of the University of Perpetual Help Altas in the NCAA men’s basketball tournament at the Cuneta Astrodome in Pasay City.

“We have five more jerseys for him (Ekwe),” Lim joked. “But it’s good that we are back to our old strength, which is our rebounding. After halftime, they (Lions) played as a team.”

The 6-foot-9 Ekwe, the subject of St. Benilde’s protest because he wore an old uniform Friday, matched a season-high 20 rebounds to go with his eight points, underscoring the Lions’ dominance of the boards.

In the last game of the day, the San Sebastian College Stags prevented another endgame collapse in a 71-64 trouncing of the Philippine Christian University Dolphins.

Jim Viray made sure there was no breakdown this time by scoring six of his 23 points in the final period after the Dolphins sliced San Sebastian’s 16-point halftime lead to five midway in the fourth quarter.

“No one has been stepping up for us in the fourth period in the past two losses, so I told Jim (Viray) that he should be the one doing it,” said Stags coach Jorge Gallent.

The Stags, who folded up in the final period in narrow setbacks to Letran College and San Beda, zoomed to a 10-0 lead, behind Viray and Raymund Maconocido, who scored 14 points.

The Lions had their way against the Altas, leaning on an Ogie Menor-led 15-0 burst opening the third quarter to pull away for good, 39-24.

The impending protest, which could cost the Lions their first defeat of the season and give the Blazers a third victory, seemed to have little effect on San Beda, which raced to a 24-9 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Diminutive guard Borgie Hermida tallied 18 points, eight assists and five steals, while skipper Pong Escobal added 13 points, seven assists and six boards for the Lions, who scored their fifth straight victory.

The Altas, who prevailed over the Stags on opening-day, closed out their first-round campaign with six consecutive losses, while the Dolphins dropped to 1-5.

In juniors’ play, Art dela Cruz Jr. scored 17 points on top of 13 rebounds to carry the San Beda Red Cubs past the Perpetual Altalettes, 108-86.

San Beda digs into arsenal to beat Perpetual, 70-48

San Beda coach Frankie Lim said they’ve finally rediscovered their old lethal weapon -- the running game.

And the Lions are seemingly in full throttle.

Unleashing a series of vicious attacks in the second half, back-to-back champion San Beda overran a listless Perpetual Help, 70-48, Monday to join idle
Letran at the helm in Season 84 of the NCAA basketball tournament at the Cuneta Astrodome.

“We’re back in our old ways. We get big rebounds we should be able to run so well, we’re comfortable with that,” Lim said.

The diminutive but big-hearted Borgie Hermida played man-possessed with game-highs 18 points, eight assists and five steals, the bulk of which he churned out in massive attacks in the final two quarters that broke the game wide open as well as the Altas’ hearts.

The Mendiola-based dribblers also controlled the boards for the second straight game by plucking 55 following a season-high 70-carom performance in a 74-51 smashing of the St. Benilde Blazers Friday.

In both games, Nigerian behemoth Sam Ekwe collared 20 rebounds that went with eight points in this match.

“That’s just dominance for you,” said Lim.

The Altas absorbed their sixth setback in row following a shock triumph over the San Sebastian Stags on opening day.

There were some anxious moments though.

After racing to a 24-9 start, the Altas fought their way back and cut their deficit to a manageable 22-24.

But San Beda closed out the first half with a 7-0 blitz to go into the break with a 31-22 upper hand.

Lim somehow voiced his disappointment over the individualistic play in the first half during their halftime talk that somehow got into his players, who unleashed a series of onslaughts in the second half that zapped the fight out of Perpetual Help.
